Russia wants cease-fire in Gaza, UN proposal
Russia wants to see a humanitarian 'ceasefire' in Israel's ongoing conflict with Hamas in the Palestinian Gaza Strip. For this, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations has presented a draft proposal. Also, Moscow has blamed the United States for the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
A draft resolution was presented by Russia in a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday. A copy of the proposal was obtained by AFP. It called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of prisoners. Also, the draft resolution has criticized all kinds of atrocities and terrorist activities against civilians.
However, Hamas was not mentioned in the Russian draft proposal. Hamas is a 'terrorist organization' in the eyes of Israel, the US and the European Union.
Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said, "We want to make it clear that the Security Council must stop the bloodshed and resume peace talks with the goal of establishing a Palestinian state." He said that some member countries of the Security Council have shown a positive attitude regarding the draft proposal.
On October 7, an unprecedented attack was launched in Israel. The number of people killed in Israel by Hamas attacks has reached 1 thousand 300. Hamas arrested about 150 Israelis.
In response, Israel launched a counterattack on the same day. Gaza's Ministry of Health reported that the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in the besieged Gaza Strip reached 1,900. More than 600 of them are children. 6 thousand 388 people were injured.
According to the United Nations, 338,000 Palestinians have been newly displaced by the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
